Sept 6th - Sept 10th
Today we left Slovakia and Krangska Gora National Park and headed into Italy and it had already started to rain and the forecast said that the next few days it was going to pour!
All of us were trying to find someplace to stay that was not our tent! We knew it was going to get really cold and really really wet.
I have found a really nice cabin in Austria, however, they were all booked up and full, so we kept looking around. My mom found a beautiful Airbnb in Northern Italy in the town of Soraga di Fasso.
When we got to the Airbnb the owner greeted us and lead us to our apartment. There were other levels to the house, where the family lived. the boys and I had our own room, I had a single bed and the boys got the double bed. My parents had their own room across the hall and there was a kitchen, bathroom and living room. It was so nice to have a little space to ourselves for a few days.
The weather sure got worse. It started to rain almost as soon as we arrived and didn't stop for two days. We stayed inside and watched some movies, played games and did a whole bunch of homework. I finished my biodiversity project for my gr. 6 science class on the Vaquita. I learned that the Vaquita is a small porpoise that lives in the northern gulf of California, it is very endangered and gets caught and drowned in gill nets.
Finally on Monday Sept 9th we were able to get outside for the day. It stopped raining and we saw that we were surrounded by snow capped mountains. My dad went outside and freaked out. He was so happy that there was snow. He has for sure decided that we area coming back to this spot for some Skiing! They have this incredible deal where all the ski hills are connected by gondolas and it makes a 42 km loop of trails and lifts that you can access. It sounds so fun!
We hiked along the Torrente Avisio river to the next town of Vigo di Fasso and in the little town there was a huge gondola (Funiviva) that took us up the mountain. In the winter it is a ski lift, but at this time of the year, hikers use it to get to thee top for awesome hikes.
The ride in the Gondola was only about 5 minutes, and it was really fast. When we got to the top we could see the whole valley and all of the mountains that were around us. It was so beautiful. All the tops of the mountains were covered in snow. It was really pretty.
The mountain restaurants were open and so we had a fabulous lunch of homemade beef barley soup, sausage on a bun and also a meat and cheese tray. It was so yummy. After we did a few small hikes around the top of the mountain and then we rode the Gondola back down into town.
It took another hour to walk back to our house and we were all really tired. What a beautiful day and we can't wait to go back and try skiing in the mountains here. We got up early on Sept 10th and then headed south towards Lago di Garda the largest lake in Italy.
Ciao!
Tia and Mari
